CONSULATE GENERAL OF JAPAN IN DETROIT ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF JAPANESE LANGUAGE SURVEY IN MICHIGAN
Thousands of K-12 and University Students Enrolled in Japanese Language Courses in the State

DETROIT, Mich. – MARCH XX, 2016– The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit has announced the results of its annual survey of Japanese language education in the state of Michigan. This survey lists the number of K-12 schools, universities and colleges offering Japanese language programs in the state, as well as with the number of students enrolled.

This year’s results show 47 K-12 schools and 17 colleges and universities in Michigan offering Japanese language courses. The number of students enrolled in K-12 schools is 3,059 with 1,860 college and university students taking classes. In total, 4,919 Michigan students are enrolled in Japanese language courses.

Currently, there are 491 Japanese facilities in Michigan that provide 39,486 jobs to local individuals. Japanese language education, along with exposure to Japanese culture, provides students a significant advantage over competition in the Japanese job market due to the Japanese business lingo and acumen they acquire.

“The number of students learning the Japanese language is a direct reflection on the global economy and the need to speak multiple languages,” said Mitsuhiro Wada, Consul General of Japan in Detroit. “I am encouraged to see so many in Michigan enrolled in Japanese language courses which further expands our two countries’ bond of friendship and understanding.”
